Abu Dhabi Smart City

Abu Dhabi Smart City Index has achieved a remarkable milestone, securing fifth place in the 2025 IMD Smart City Index. Rising five spots from its 2024 position.

The IMD Smart City Index ranks 146 cities worldwide based on residents’ perceptions of infrastructure and technological services. Abu Dhabi’s improved ranking highlights its abundant green spaces, free public Wi-Fi, effective traffic management, and excellent public transportation.

His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the DMT, underscored the significance of this accomplishment. He stated, “Over the past five years, Abu Dhabi has steadily climbed the world’s smart city rankings, moving from 14th place in 2020 to 5th place this year.

Abu Dhabi’s connectivity and accessibility played a pivotal role in its achievement. Nearly 75% of respondents identified free public Wi-Fi, available on buses, beaches, and public parks through the Hala Wi-Fi initiative, as a key factor in improving public services.

More than half of those surveyed reported minimal traffic congestion, and 82% praised the efficiency of the public transport network. This satisfaction is reflected in over 90 million rides on public buses last year, along with 168,000 passengers utilizing Abu Dhabi’s water transportation network.

In 2024, DMT invested AED 3.4 billion into crucial mobility and road network projects. A notable initiative, a double-bridge on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, reduced morning peak-hour delays by up to 80%.

Green spaces significantly contributed to Abu Dhabi’s Smart City Index score. Approximately 84% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the availability and upkeep of parks and recreational areas.

In 2024 alone, more than 200 new parks and beaches were inaugurated, enriching the city’s appeal and quality of life. Additionally, the DMT smart parks initiative introduced interconnected sensors, improving visitor experiences and management efficiency.

Through the Abu Dhabi Canvas initiative, public spaces were enhanced with artistic contributions that celebrated UAE heritage. This initiative reflects the capital’s dedication to cultural preservation while fostering community engagement.

Further cementing its status as a global smart city, Abu Dhabi hosts the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation’s (WeGO) MENA regional office. This positions the emirate as a hub for collaboration and innovation across the region.

Abu Dhabi’s vision for 2025, dubbed the “Year of Community,” focuses on leveraging technology and AI to empower residents and businesses. This recognition underscores the emirate’s comprehensive approach to sustainable urban development.
